John is a Chicago native with 6 years of International experience as a member of Team USA and 9 years at the pro level. He played his entire WHL Junior career with the Tacoma Rockets amassing 333pts in 254 games. He still ranks as the 2nd top US born player in WHL scoring history. John Was a member of US Select 15, 16, 17, 18 teams during his amateur career. Winner of Gold and Silver medals at the 92&93 US Olympic Festivals. He then played for the 94 US World Junior Team and the over 20 US National team preparing for the Olympic games. A very fast skating goal scoring winger who still holds records for on ice testing at the US training centers.


John was Selected by the Washington Capitals in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. Was part of the birth of NHL summer training programs with the Caps that saw 12 players in three draft years make the NHL club. After his pro career he retired in the suburbs of Chicago near his Hockey Hall of Fame father Lou Varga. Lou was the Trainer for the Chicago Black Hawks for 39 years before his induction into the HHOF.


Since retiring, John has remained very active in Chicago youth hockey. He is the Founder and Head Instructor for the Chicago Speed which encompasses Hockey Camps and Elite level teams as well as a skills coach throughout Illinois. Was the 2007&2008 Chicago Brick Series Head Coach and also Coached with legendary Denis Savard for the 02 Chicago Brick Team. He started his Chicago AAA coaching career at the Chicago Mission with the 2002&2003 teams. He then moved on to the Chicago Fury where he has built numerous Squirt AAA teams. He will be coaching his 16th Squirt AAA team this fall. He is known for pushing his athletes to an elite level of play and creating a strong team environment. His teams are always one of the top teams in the country.
